Pokemon Unbound Walkthrough: Gym Order, Story Progression & Where to Go Next

Pokemon Unbound Walkthrough featured image with gym order, story progression, HM unlocks and where to go next

Borrius doesn’t hold your hand. Between the mission system, the optional detours, and gym gimmicks that break normal type logic, it’s easy to clear a gym and then just… stand there, not sure where the story wants you next. This Pokemon Unbound walkthrough isn’t a room-by-room transcript — a dedicated wiki already does that job well, in about 40 separate parts. What’s here instead is the one-page version: story progression in order, all 8 gyms with what actually matters about each one, and a roadblock table for the specific moments that stump almost everyone. If you haven’t patched the game yet, the Pokemon Unbound page covers setup — this one assumes you’re already in Borrius and want to know what’s next.

Difficulty note: Vanilla, Difficult, Expert, and Insane all follow the same route and gym order. What changes is team composition, held items, movesets, and occasionally a boss mechanic gets extra layers (Alice’s Strong Winds on Expert/Insane is one example). Don’t take a single gym strategy as universal — check which difficulty a source is describing before copying its team recommendation.

Early Game: Dresco Through Blizzard City

The opening stretch is mostly linear. From Bellin Town you’ll work through Icicle Cave into Dresco Town, where Mirskle’s Fog gimmick is more annoying than dangerous — accuracy drops for everyone, so fights just run long. Beat him for the Leaf Badge and the story sends you toward Cinder Volcano, where the Shadows make off with Moltres. That’s not a side quest you can skip; it’s the route to Crater Town.

Véga is the first real difficulty spike. His Negative Emotions field chips away at anything that isn’t Dark or Ghost every turn, on top of a genuinely strong team. Beating him gets you the Vision Badge, and shortly after — following a forced detour where Shadow admins drag you to Cinder Volcano — a Mountain Climber in KBT Expressway hands over HM Cut.

Cut opens Valley Cave, which leads toward Frost Mountain and Blizzard City. Alice’s gym is a vertical tower rather than a maze, and her Tailwind field gives her Flying-types a huge Speed advantage — they’ll often move before the rest of your team unless you match their speed or bring your own Flying-type. Rock, Ice, and Electric hit her team hard. Winning gets you the Wings Badge and Rock Smash from a Mountain Climber NPC already waiting in the city.

Mid Game: Fallshore Through Antisis City

This is where most players actually get stuck, so it’s worth slowing down.

Mel isn’t in his own gym. Walk into Fallshore City Gym expecting a fight and you’ll find it empty — Mel has to be tracked down in Tehl Town first and talked into coming back. Once he does, his gym runs on Inverse Battle rules, which flips type effectiveness entirely. His team is all Normal-type, so the fighting-type moves you’d normally lean on barely scratch him under Inverse rules — bring hard-hitting neutral coverage instead. Beat him and he hands you HM Fly directly, usable immediately, along with the Fall Badge, which also covers Strength (picked up separately from an NPC in Epidimy Town).

You’ll pick up HM Surf on Route 12 after the rival sequence, once Successor Maxima’s been dealt with in Tarmigan Town — but that’s not the same as reaching Dehara Gym yet. Walk into Dehara City and Hoopa forcibly teleports you and Jax straight into the Ruins of Void before you ever get a shot at Galavan. That’s not a wrong turn — it’s the story doing what it does. Push through the legendary-beast gauntlet there, work through Cinder Volcano Depths and Shadow Base, and you’ll land back in Dehara City ready to actually challenge the gym.

The Surf trap: you receive HM03 Surf on Route 12 after the rival sequence. Having the HM is not the same as being able to use it in the field — you can’t surf outside battle until you beat Galavan at Dehara City Gym and earn the Battery Badge. If Surf looks like it’s “not working,” this is one of the first things to check.

Dehara Gym itself is a Double Battle where Galavan’s team effectively ignores Ground moves. Winning also gets you the Go-Goggles from a Hiker near the desert gate back in Dehara City — without them, the guard turns you away at the Great Desert entrance.

From there it’s a long stretch — the Great Desert, Gurun Town, Vivill Woods — before Antisis City and Big Mo.

Big Mo is not a “no Flying/Fairy/Psychic Pokémon” gym. Those Pokémon are completely legal on your team. What actually happens: the game counts how many Flying-, Psychic-, and Fairy-type moves exist across your whole party’s moveset, then disables whichever of those three types shows up most. Tied counts get broken in the order Flying, then Psychic, then Fairy. The same restriction applies during the Ring Challenge you fight through before reaching him. Beat Big Mo and you get the Ring Badge, Rock Climb, and TM60 Drain Punch.

Late Game: Polder Town Through Victory Road

After Antisis, the route runs through Seaport City and a boat crossing to East Borrius, landing you in Polder Town. Tessy’s gym runs on what the community calls Camomons rules — every Pokémon’s typing becomes whatever its first two moves would be, so a Water-type carrying Ice and Electric moves suddenly resists what you’d expect it to be weak to. Check movesets, not species names, before picking counters. Beat her for the Swamp Badge and HM Waterfall, handed over together.

The last stretch runs through Cootes Bog, Magnolia Town, and Crystal Peak to Redwood Village. Benjamin’s gym flips the usual fainting rule: instead of going down at zero HP, a Pokémon devolves to its previous stage and keeps fighting, all the way down to a base form that can’t devolve further. It resets automatically after the fight, but devolving mid-battle can cost moves the lower stage hasn’t learned yet, so don’t assume a “fainted” Pokémon is actually out of the fight.

Eight badges down. With the Time Badge, the main-story badge requirements are complete and Route 18/Victory Road are your next destination. The badge also authorizes Dive, but HM05 itself is a post-game unlock and isn’t needed to reach the League.

The Pokémon League

Once you’re through Victory Road, the League has four Elite Four members plus a Champion:

  • Moleman — Ground, permanent heavy Sandstorm, Double Battle
  • Elias — Ghost, “Shadowy Veil” field that halves damage to full-HP Ghost-types
  • Arabella — Fairy, misty field that boosts her team’s weaker defensive stat
  • Penny — Dragon, boosted secondary-effect chance for Dragon moves, Double Battle
  • Champion Jax — team adapts to whichever starter you picked, Double Battle

You can fight the Elite Four in any order, but there’s no returning to a Pokémon Center between them, so go in stocked on healing items regardless of which door you pick first. League teams scale to match your team level, and grinding alone won’t trivialize the run — prioritize coverage, healing supplies, and answers to each battlefield gimmick over just piling on levels.

FAQ

Quick answers to the questions this Pokemon Unbound walkthrough gets asked most:

What is the Pokemon Unbound gym order? Dresco Town (Mirskle), Crater Town (Véga), Blizzard City (Alice), Fallshore City (Mel), Dehara City (Galavan), Antisis City (Big Mo), Polder Town (Tessy), and Redwood Village (Benjamin), in that order.

Where do I go after Fallshore Gym? Head toward Thundercap Mountain and then Tarmigan Town — that’s where the story’s next major beat, Successor Maxima, is waiting.

When do I get Surf in Pokemon Unbound? You receive HM03 Surf on Route 12 after the rival sequence. You can’t use it outside battle until you’ve also beaten Galavan and earned the Battery Badge at Dehara.

Why can’t I use Surf even though I have it? Because having the HM item and having field-use permission are two separate unlocks in this hack — see the table above.

How do I reach the Pokémon League? Clear all 8 gyms, then push through Victory Road, which exits directly outside the League building.

Does difficulty change the story route? No — the path and gym order are identical across Vanilla, Difficult, Expert, and Insane. What changes is team strength, held items, and occasionally an added mechanic layer on a specific boss fight.
