Omega is FireRed with the safety off. The map and the story haven’t moved, but you pick Smoochum, Elekid or Magby, the whole National Dex is open from the start, and every Gym Leader shows up with six Pokémon.

Why Omega Stands Out

It’s made for people who have already beaten FireRed and want it to push back. Drayano released it in 2009, and it still works as a way to replay Kanto without knowing what’s coming. Because the route is unchanged, our FireRed walkthrough still shows where to go next if you get stuck, though Gym teams and trainer levels will differ.

If Omega still feels too forgiving, Pokemon Radical Red is the tougher pick.

Key Features

  • New starters. Smoochum, Elekid or Magby, all boosted and all evolving at level 24. The Kanto, Johto and Hoenn starters turn up later as gifts.
  • National Dex from the first hour. All 386 Pokémon from Gens 1 to 3 can be caught, according to Drayano.
  • Six-Pokémon bosses. Gym Leaders and Giovanni bring full teams, and trainer levels run higher across the game.
  • Elite Four on your schedule. Challenge them whenever you like, with a second round and extra dialogue.
  • Trade evolutions without trading. Gengar, Alakazam, Golem, Steelix and Scizor all evolve by level.
  • Reworked moves. Hyper Beam skips its recharge turn (at 65% accuracy), and Blast Burn, Hydro Cannon and Frenzy Plant lose their recharge too.
  • Bonus areas near the end. Chronum Tower, Ancient Labyrinth and Yggdrasill Forest open up late in the game.

Quick FAQ

What is the latest version of Fire Red Omega?

Drayano never numbered his releases, so use his latest patch, the one whose download link he fixed in December 2012. Labels like v1.0.1 (a file name) or Omega DX (a download-site name) aren’t official version numbers.

Is Fire Red Omega a complete game?

Yes. It’s the full FireRed story with extra areas added near the end.

Which ROM do I need?

A clean US FireRed ROM, the one Drayano labels 1636 – Pokemon Fire Red (U). Other versions can crash or show garbled text.

Is it the same as FireRed ω?

No. FireRed ω is a separate, newer hack built on top of Omega.
