How evolution works in FireRed

The Evolution Guide shows how every Pokémon evolves in Pokémon FireRed: the level it needs, the evolution stone to use, whether it has to be traded (and which item it has to hold), or how much friendship it needs. Branching families such as Eevee are shown as a tree, and the Pokémon you picked is highlighted in its chain.

Everything follows the rules of the Generation III games, not modern Pokémon. FireRed has no internal clock, so evolutions that depend on the time of day, such as Espeon and Umbreon, cannot happen. Evolutions into Pokémon outside the Kanto Pokédex, such as Crobat, Blissey or Steelix, only work once you have received the National Pokédex.

  • Use the Method tab to list every Pokémon that evolves by level, stone, trade, trade with an item or friendship.
  • Evolution item locations are only shown when they exist in the game data.
  • Data was generated from the game files of Pokémon FireRed.

Evolution items and where to get them

The Fire Stone, Water Stone, Thunder Stone and Leaf Stone are sold at the Celadon City Department Store, while the Moon Stone and Sun Stone have to be found. The held items that trade evolutions need are all on the Sevii Islands: King’s Rock in Sevault Canyon, Metal Coat at Memorial Pillar, Dragon Scale on the Water Path and Up-Grade in the Rocket Warehouse. The Deep Sea Tooth and Deep Sea Scale have no location in FireRed’s game data. A held item is used up when the trade evolution happens.
