How FireRed type matchups work

Every attack in Pokémon FireRed has a type, and every Pokémon has one or two types. The attacking type decides whether damage is doubled, halved, or removed entirely. The Type Checker shows those multipliers for the Pokémon in FireRed and for each of the 17 types, using the Generation III rules that FireRed runs on.

A dual-type Pokémon takes the product of both of its types: 2× × 2× is a 4× weakness, 0.5× × 0.5× is a 0.25× resistance, and 2× × 0.5× cancels out to 1×. If either type is immune, the damage is 0×. FireRed has 17 types, with no Fairy type, and Steel still resists Ghost and Dark.

  • Weak to: attacking types that deal 2× or 4× damage.
  • Resistant to: attacking types that deal 0.5× or 0.25× damage.
  • Immune to: attacking types that deal no damage at all.
  • Results are type-based only. Abilities, items and moves are not included.

    Immunities in Generation III

FireRed has seven type immunities: Normal and Fighting moves cannot hurt Ghost types, Ghost moves cannot hurt Normal types, Electric moves cannot hurt Ground types, Ground moves cannot hurt Flying types, Poison moves cannot hurt Steel types, and Psychic moves cannot hurt Dark types. The Type Checker uses FireRed’s own matchups, so a chart from a newer game, which includes the Fairy type and other later changes, can give a different answer.
